Jacksonville Mini-Reunion, 30 April - 2 May 2019
The Class's mini-reunion in Jacksonville at the beginning of May was a tremendous success, thanks to the hard work of Phil Becton and Preston Haskell, although in truth most of the organizational work seems to have been done by Preston's unbelievably capable assistant, Maggie Bulin. After arriving where we were staying, at a luxury resort in Ponte Vedra Beach overlooking the ocean, we began our scheduled activities with a wonderful dinner on Tuesday in a downtown restaurant high up overlooking the area and the St. John's River running through town. Wednesday was taken up with a variety of sightseeing events in and around town: a boat ride up and down the river which featured Preston discussing the history of the Jacksonville area (in which his own Haskell Company was an important influence on downtown development), concluding with a tour of the Haskell Company's building, featuring some of Preston's art collection; a trip to a nearby plantation now functioning as an animal rescue area; and visits to local museums. The day culminated with drinks and an even more wonderful dinner at Preston's beautiful riverfront home, full of spectacular modern art. The final event, on Thursday morning, was a brunch in an oceanfront restaurant which was part of the Ponte Vedra Beach Inn and Club where we were staying.
